If your drains are just slower than usual, you probably have the beginnings of a clog. In cases such as this, DIY efforts are most effective. For example, you can clear many bathroom sink or kitchen sink clogs by simply pouring boiling water into the drain and letting it sit. Most drains clog because of some combination of organic matter and fats, such as bacon grease or soap. The hot water liquefies these fats and allows them to release whatever organic matter (hair, vegetable fibers, etc.) they had been collecting in the clog.
If that doesn’t work, your next best bet is to snake your drain. You can snake your drain using an old wire hanger or by using an inexpensive drain snake from your local hardware store. Snaking a drain allows you to dislodge the clog and pull it back up and out of the drain, where you can dispose of it in the nearest trash can. Wearing a good pair of cleaning gloves or disposable gloves will keep any gunk off of your hands during the process.
If all these techniques fail, we recommend calling a licensed plumber as your next step, rather than trying any caustic drain cleaning chemicals. Drain cleaners work by using an extremely caustic liquid to eat through the clog; however, they can damage your drains if your plumbing system is old or if your pipelining is too worn away to prevent the drain cleaner from damaging the pipes. You also don’t want any caustic chemicals on your hands or in your eyes or lungs, as they can be hazardous.
